A Couple Of Things

I just wanted to remind all of you who knew Lynn Carter that her memorial service will be tomorrow night (Saturday 11/11) at 7:00pm at McClure Funeral Home in Mebane. If you knew Lynn or any of the Carter family, I know they would appreciate you stopping by.

Please continue to remember Lynn's family in your prayers. Especially her children. I am 31 years old and I would be a wreck if I lost my mother, so I can't even imagine what they are going through and at such a young age. Lynn's youngest son was younger than my two children. And I know that we are supposed to rejoice at death and grieve at birth, but that's easier said than done. I have taken this really hard myself simply because she was my friend and I will miss her and also because it was so unexpected. But it just goes to show that we are not promised tomorrow. Therefore it pays to be ready TODAY. I am leaning on God for strength and comfort and I am praying that He gives the same to Lynn's family. I have to sing at her memorial service tomorrow night and that will be one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. I know that God will get me through it though. And I pray that He would use me to speak to someone there. I am praying that something wonderful will come out of all of this....that a soul would be saved, or someone encouraged back from the brink. I'm not sure exactly what God has in store, but I am expecting miracles.

Now...getting back to what I was saying about not being promised tomorrow. You know, I love God with my whole heart and I long for the day when I can see Him face to face. But I have to admit that in my flesh, because I love my family, I don't want to leave this old world just yet. That's just the human in me. I want to see my children grow up and get married and have families of their own. I want to grow old with my husband and enjoy many joyous years of serving the Lord. And I have many family members and friends who don't know the Lord, and I would love to stay here long enough to see them accept Him and make their life right. Now with that being said, make no mistake...although I am not in a HURRY to get to Heaven, I am READY to go. I'm not perfect...far from it in fact....but my sins have been forgiven by the King of all Kings, the Lover of My Soul, my Savior Jesus Christ. And through faith, I know that because I have done according to His Word and have sought Him, I have been given my ticket to my home on the other side. But there was a time when I couldn't say that. There was a time when I would say "Oh yeah, I'm going to Heaven" but deep in my heart I wasn't sure. At that time I knew I wasn't living right. I was about as far from God as I could be. But thanks be to Him, He patiently waited for me to come back to Him and make things right. What would have happened if my time on earth had ended back then? I honestly believe I would be in hell today. And that's something we just don't know.....we could go out to meet the Lord today, tomorrow, next month, or 20 years from now. No fortune teller, psychic or magic 8 ball is going to tell you for sure when your time is going to be up. And so many of us are taking such a big risk by saying, "I'll get things right tomorrow". But what if tomorrow never comes? Not only are we faced with death, there is also the impending certainty of the Rapture. And if Jesus split those skies today to call His children home, would you go with Him or be left here? Because it's not a choice you will be able to make when it happens. Jesus isn't going to stand there and wait for you and say "Are you coming or not?" It doesn't work that way. You have to make that choice NOW. 2 Corinthians 6:13 says: For He says:“ In an acceptable time I have heard you,And in the day of salvation I have helped you.” Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.

I am sure that when Lynn woke up Monday morning, she had no idea that she would go out to meet God before the day was done. She had no idea that she was about to leave this world and everything in it.

Now for those of us still left here, we have two choices: we can continue to go on about our lives as we have before, or we can make preparations to see Lynn again one day. We can seek God NOW so that we have a promise of tomorrow. People, we are playing literal Russian Roulette with our lives! We are biding time, thinking (hoping) that God will give us one more day to make things right. But we are not promised one more day, not even one more minute. And if your time on earth ended right now, where would you spend eternity? If you can't say without a shadow of a doubt that you would be in heaven, then I strongly encourage you to go to http://www.geocities.com/lighthousebaptistchrch/howtobesaved and read How To Be Saved. You can have the assurance that no matter when you are called home that you will spend eternity in splendor and joy, not in torment and flames. I have my ticket....I have made my preparations...and whenever God calls me home, I know that I will be at home with Him forever. Please be there with me.

Until next time....

Be blessed!

Love,
Stephanie

Encouragement for Today

Principle 1

“Hanging On”

Susanne Scheppmann, Proverbs 31 Speaker Team Member, Co-editor Online Devotions

Key Verse:

Deuteronomy 32:46-47, “He said to them, ‘Take to heart all the words I have solemnly declared to you this day, so that you may command your children to obey carefully all the words of this law. They are not just idle words for you--they are your life.’” (NIV)

Devotion:

Do you ever feel like you are just barely hanging on in life? I do. Life circumstances seem to keep me off balance on a regular basis. However, yesterday I learned a lesson about life through bird watching.

I sat mesmerized by a flock of small yellow finches that hung upside down from a white mesh feeding-sock. They clung to the feeder filled with seeds with their tiny toes. With gravity defying agility, the birds continued to peck at the seeds despite their topsy-turvy position.

Occasionally, a strong gust of wind would shake the feeder. The birds ignored the earthquake that jostled their restaurant and calmly continued to peck undisturbed. Then, a new crisis developed. Large, ungainly, brown grackle birds began to dive bomb the finches. They attempted to knock the finches off the feeder. Nevertheless, the finches just clung to the mesh by their tiny toes. They did not allow themselves to be dislodged from their life-sustaining nourishment—the birdseed.

I glanced down at my Bible and thought, “That’s my life giving food. Do I cling to it when I find myself being thrown off balance with the challenges of life?” Unfortunately, I have to admit I don’t always hold on to the Word when times become difficult. It seems easier to just worry and fret over the day’s events instead of trusting God and His Word.   Today’s Key Verse clearly instructs us, however, to “take to heart all the words I have solemnly declared . . . They are not just idle words for you—they are your life.”

I pondered these thoughts as I continued to watch the finches. Then the birds illustrated another truth of hanging onto God’s Word. While the baby birds struggled to hang on, the parents would take a few bites and then feed the younger finches the seeds they held in their beaks. This enabled the fledglings to concentrate on keeping their balance on the bird sock.

I recalled how often Christians more mature than myself had offered me the truth of God’s Word when a dilemma ruffled my walk of faith. Their patient support and encouragement enabled me to learn to trust the Hand of God.

So, my feathered friends taught me two lessons. One is to hang on to the truth of God’s Word no matter how much my life is rattled by problems. Moreover, not only do I need to accept help from others whose walk of faith is further along, but I should offer help to others who are swinging frantically on the rope of life’s difficulties.

My friends, lets hang on together and share God’s Word—for It is our life.

My Prayer for Today:

Dear Lord, I desire to hang on to Your Word. Make me hungry to read It each day so that my strength is in You. Help me to share Your Word with others who are just hanging on in difficult situations. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Application Steps:

Read Psalm 119. Highlight all the verses that refer to the benefits of God’s Word in our lives.

Reflection Points:

Do I read my Bible on a regular basis for spiritual nutrition?

Do I encourage others to hold onto God’s Word?

How can I devote more time to study the Bible?

Power Verses:

Colossians 3:16, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.” (NIV)

1 Thessalonians 2:13, “And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is at work in you who believe.” (NIV)

2 Thessalonians 2:15, “So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.” (NIV)

Not Guilty

Sharon Jaynes

Today's Truth

“And I will ask the Father and He will give you another Counselor, to be with you forever – the Spirit of truth” (John 14:15).

Friend to Friend

During Jesus’ last supper discourse, He reassured the disciples that He would not leave them as orphans. “And I will ask the Father and He will give you another Counselor, to be with you forever – the Spirit of truth” (John 14:15).  The Greek word which is also translated Helper (NASB) and Comforter (KJV), is parakletos and means a “person summoned to one’s aid.”[i] Originally it was a term used in a court of justice to denote a legal assistant, counsel for the defense, an advocate; then, generally, one who pleas another’s cause, an intercessor, an advocate. [ii]

I love the image of being in a court of law because I have come to see Satan as the accuser (Revelation 12:10).  He points His gnarly finger in our faces and says things like, “You aren’t a very good Christian,” “Jesus doesn’t really love you,” “You were a mistake when you were born,” “You’ve really blown it this time,”  “What makes you any different now than before you accepted Christ,”  “I don’t see much fruit in your life,”  “You’re a pitiful excuse as a wife, as a mother, as a child of God,” etc.

Now tell me, have you ever heard any of those statements before.  Perhaps you’ve always assumed these were your own musings. That’s exactly what Satan would have you believe.  However, I believe those accusatory statements are words from Satan that he whispers in our ears.  It sounds like us, it feels like us, but it’s from the accuser himself. It is always amazing to me that while I might have trouble hearing God’s voice, Satan’s usually comes through loud and clear.  Why, we even think they are our thoughts.

On the other hand, the Holy Spirit is our counselor, our attorney, who comes along side us and repeats, “Not guilty!  Not guilty!  Not guilty!” He says, “No jail time!  You, my child, have been set free!”

[ii] Ibid. Vines p.111

Let's Pray

Dear Lord, there are many days when I feel guilty.  I know now that it is Satan who tries to make me feel guilty and whispers accusing thoughts into my head.  Thank you that Jesus died on the cross to pay the penalty for my sin so that I can walk in freedom and live for eternity in heaven with You.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Now it's Your Turn

Do you feel guilty because of past sin?

Have you asked God to forgive you for those mistakes?

Have you accepted God’s forgiveness or are you listening to the lies of Satan that continue to convict you?

To whom do you need to listen - God who says you are forgiven and set free or Satan who says that you are guilty and don’t deserve to be happy?

For the Sake of the Call

Mary Southerland

Today's Truth

Romans 12:1-2 “So brothers and sisters, since God has shown us great mercy, I beg you to offer your lives as a living sacrifice to him. Your offering must be only for God and pleasing to him, which is the spiritual way for you to worship. Do not change yourselves to be like the people of this world, but be changed within by a new way of thinking. Then you will be able to decide what God wants for you; you will know what is good and pleasing to him and what is perfect.” (NCV)

Friend to Friend

To excel at any sport requires that each competitor learn the true meaning of abandonment.  Becoming a champion demands the commitment to live every part of life straining toward that objective. Excellence always requires sacrifice, discipline and a willingness to pay an enormous price.  My son, Jered, is a college football player who has learned that to be the best player he can be means he must throw himself into weight training, personal discipline and mental readiness. It takes a cavernous commitment and a willing abandonment to reach that goal of excellence.

Jered has a great role model in his friend, Russell, a young man who really does not have the physical size to execute the position he plays on the football field.  As a linebacker, he readily admits that there are other players on the team with superior ability as well as greater strength and talent.  But Russell is a “play maker” who can change the entire momentum of the game with one electric play.  The coaches say Russell’s success is the result of his total willingness to abandon himself every time he steps onto the football field.  He has literally knocked himself out several times while blocking the opponent.  If you ask Russell the secret of his success he will say that anytime you approach the game with that kind of abandonment, something great is bound to happen.

And so it is with our life journey. Jesus wants us to come to Him with total abandon.  In Matthew 22:37 Jesus said, "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.” (NIV)  In this verse, “heart” literally means “thought and emotion”, “soul” literally means “life or whole person” and “mind” literally means “understanding”.  In other words, we must lay down everything!  Every thought - every emotion - every bit of knowledge - our past, present and future – just like the woman in Luke did.  Luke 7: 37b “She brought an alabaster jar of perfume.”

Alabaster was a soft stone imported from Egypt into Palestine.  Light and creamy in color, it was especially popular for storing perfume and ointments.  The jar was small, fitting easily into the palm of the hand.  Alabaster jars were very common and of little value. It was the substance hidden inside that was so valuable.  The perfume was the woman’s most precious possession, very expensive but very necessary in her line of work.  You see, she was a prostitute.  She was not wealthy by any means and worked the streets, selling her body in order to live.  The money that was given to her by the men she slept with paid for the perfume she brought to Jesus.

She could have put a small amount on the feet of Jesus and it would have been a great financial sacrifice.  But she brought it all and she gave it all!  She came, totally abandoning herself and all that she had to Him. “Abandon” literally means “without restraint or hindrance, a total relinquishment”.  This woman came to Jesus walking through her fear, ignoring the hindrances and relinquishing her old way of life.  She must have ignored the ugly whispers and judgmental stares.  I am certain that she wore her own guilt and self-condemnation for all to see.

Why did she come?  She was exhausted, weary of living.  The emptiness and sin were eating away at her soul.  She was tired of being used, unloved and unwanted. Her sin had drained her to the point that she could not go on. This woman was desperate; ready to give up everything for the forgiveness and rest that only Jesus seemed able to provide.  This desolate woman came to the One who spoke these words of healing and hope in Matthew 11: 28 "Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”  “Rest” literally means “a resting place”.  This woman was looking for a place of rest, a place she could call home.  She found that place at the feet of Jesus Christ.  Now, He calls you to that same kind of abandonment. As you place your trust completely in Him - with total abandonment – you will begin to experience the power an intimate relationship with Him can bring.

Let's Pray

Lord, I come to you – giving my all.  I am holding nothing back, Lord.  I am so weary, tired of trying to live life my way.  Right now, I lay my agenda down, surrendering completely to you.  Will you raise up what is of you and let fall away what is not.  Amen.

Now it's Your Turn

I have a challenge for you.  Ask your husband, father, child or friend to help you do this exercise.  Your partner will stand directly behind you, arms outstretched, ready to catch you.  You must fall backward, trusting your partner to catch you.  That is the picture of abandonment.

What does it mean to offer your body as a “living sacrifice”?  Are you ready to make that commitment?

Look back over your life.  Pinpoint one time when you have approached a career, relationship or activity with a total abandonment.  What was the result?

Encouragement for Today

Principle 4

“Healthy Hearts are Happy Hearts”

Lysa TerKeurst, President of Proverbs 31 Ministries

Key Verse:

Matthew 7:9-11, “Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone?  Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?  If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will you Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!” (NIV)

Devotion:

Healthy hearts are happy hearts.  We have a special tradition of afternoon treats in our home. Now a nutritionist may or may not agree with me, but I think it’s a most heart healthy habit. Not that our treats are always that healthy, mind you. My kids and I love fresh baked cookies, moist chewy brownies, and other concoctions of all kinds. Sometimes we eat apples, oranges, or some other snack from the healthier regions of the food pyramid. But mostly we like sweet treats.

These treats are “heart” healthy for how they create moments of joy in the midst of busy schedules, projects that are due, activities to attend, and chores to be done. It’s a little burst of comfort that I, as a mom, delight in giving my children. It says, “I love you…I think about ways to make you happy…and I consider it a privilege to enjoy a treat with you.”

I remember as a little girl, my mom making ginger snap cookies for me. Even now, I can close my eyes and picture her rolling little balls of brown dough through the sugar before placing them on the cookie sheet. Then I’d watch as she placed them in the oven. The best part, though, was when mom and I enjoyed the first bite together. They were a connection point for us, and to this day, the smell of ginger makes me smile.

If these little treats made me happy as a child, why do they have to stop? I mean, why is it that I sometimes think motherhood is all about what I do for others and never about the wonderful benefits of treating myself? Sometimes the religious church lady in me creeps in with a wagging finger saying, “Don’t be so worldly! Pull out your Bible and read a verse or two. Get refreshed from the Spirit. Drink the Living Water and you’ll never thirst again. If you are really feeling weary, sing a hymn or two and stop thinking of yourself. It is better to give than receive!” Yikes. So, I whisper back at her, “If you are so into giving these days, I’d gladly let you watch my five kids, run their carpools, clean and cook for me while I go sit in the tub and sing hymns and reflect on spiritual insights.”

Yes, I think it is the best kind of refreshment to let the Lord fill you. But, just like me giving treats to my kids makes me happy, I think our Heavenly Father would like for us to receive things that make us happy as a treat from Him.

There has been so much talk about the difference between joy and happiness in the Christian world that we tend to shy away from happiness. Now granted, ginger snaps can’t provide me with lasting joy, but they sure can lighten a heavy moment. So, why not make a list of things that really make you feel happy. Then the next time you are feeling a little drained, put a care package together for yourself and thank God for His sweet treats.

My Prayer for Today:

Thank you, God, for simple treats that make me happy. They are a gift from You.  Help me give myself permission to receive them as a simple reason to give You thanks and to make my heart happy.

Application Steps:

Here are some of the things on my sweet treats care package list as an idea.  Think about what you really want and make up your own package:

1.  Cinnamon Altoids Gum

2.  Black gel pen-medium point

3.  A candle that smells of the season

4.  New pair of white socks

5.  Lemon flavored Propel

6.  Brownies from a box mix

7.  Dryer sheets-fresh spring scent

8.  Inspirational CD

9.  Cup of White Chocolate Mocha, skim, no whip, no foam, extra hot

If you feel like it, share your sweet treats with others.  Sharing the experience can make it that much more enjoyable!

Reflection Points:

What are some simple treats that make your heart happy?

What small gifts of happiness has God allowed you to experience recently?

Do you acknowledge them as gifts from your Heavenly Father?

God is a parent who loves to give gifts to His daughters.  How has God taught you about being His child?

Power Verses:
James 1:17, “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” (NIV)

Ecclesiastes 2:25-26, “For without him, who can eat of find enjoyment?  To the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God.  This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.” (NIV)

Proverbs 15:13, “A happy heart makes the face cheerful.” (NIV)
